Contamination OCD
You washed, and it was fine for about a minute. Then you thought about the door handle, or the bin, or your sleeve brushing the seat, and the feeling came back with the same weight it had before. Or it was never about germs: it is a particular person, a place, a word, or a memory that seems to leave something behind on everything it touches, and no amount of washing reaches it.
Contamination OCD is broader than hygiene. It covers contact fears involving dirt, bodily fluids, chemicals, or illness, and it also covers what is often called mental or emotional contamination, where the sense of being tainted comes from a person or an event rather than a substance. Both can lead to washing, avoiding, changing clothes, elaborate decontamination routines, and long stretches of mental checking.
What a printable contamination OCD workbook gives you
These pages are ERP-informed. ERP means exposure and response prevention: making contact with something you have been avoiding, then not performing the ritual that usually follows. Written down, that becomes a set of ladders, trackers, and prompts you can work through in your own time and at your own pace.
- Exposure ladders you build yourself, starting with what feels workable rather than what feels impossible
- Washing-delay and decontamination-delay trackers
- Prompts for mapping spreading rules: what counts as contaminated, what it passes to, and where the line sits today
- Uncertainty scripts for the questions that no amount of checking can answer
If you want to read before you buy, our guide to how contamination OCD works covers the theme in more depth, and building an ERP exposure hierarchy walks through how a ladder is put together.
Which of the two workbooks fits
The Contamination OCD Workbook — $11.99
The general starting point: a 44-page workbook with exposure ladders and washing-delay trackers, covering germ and dirt fears alongside emotional contamination. Start here if your fear is mostly about substances, or if you are not certain which description fits you.
The Emotional Contamination Workbook — $11.99
A 44-page workbook built specifically for contamination that travels through people, places, words, and memories rather than substances. It includes contact exposures, mental-washing prevention, uncertainty scripts, and ladders for spreading rules. Choose this if soap was never really the point.
Both are instant downloads containing a print edition and a fillable edition of the same material, and both include a cut-out sheet of eight plain pocket cards, unlabeled, for the times you are away from the workbook.
Questions people ask first
Will it tell me how much washing is normal?
No. There are no rules here about how long to wash or what counts as objectively clean, because a rule like that tends to become one more certainty to lean on. The pages help you plan and record your own practice instead.
How is this different from health anxiety?
They overlap, and plenty of people experience both. Our article on health anxiety and OCD goes through where the two themes meet and where they diverge. If you are struggling or unsure what you are dealing with, a qualified mental health professional is the right person to help you sort it out.
Is this therapy?
No. This is educational self-help material, not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for professional care. Many people use a workbook alongside therapy, and it is worth telling your therapist if you do.
What do I receive?
A PDF download, linked by email immediately after checkout. Print it at home as many times as you like, or type into the fillable edition on a tablet or computer.
